HOW TO CHECK YOUR PARAGLIDING GEAR LIKE A PRO BEFORE YOUR MILE HIGH FLIGHT
You’re standing on the launch site. The wind’s perfect. Your heart’s pounding. One gear failure at 15,000 feet and the dream turns into a nightmare. Don’t let that happen. Follow this checklist now—every single time.
GEAR UP: WHAT YOU’RE CHECKING TODAY
Harness. Reserve parachute. Main wing. Speed system. Helmet. Radio. Altimeter. Hook knife. You’ve got eight critical pieces. Miss one, and you’re with your life. Start with the harness.
STEP 1: INSPECT YOUR HARNESS
Unpack it. Lay it flat on the ground. Look for frayed stitching, especially around the leg loops and shoulder straps. Run your fingers along every seam. If you feel loose threads or rough spots, ground yourself. That harness isn’t f.
Check the buckles. Metal should be shiny, not corroded. Plastic should be smooth, not cracked. Snap each buckle open and shut five times. If it sticks, replace it. No excuses.

STEP 3: MAIN WING INSPECTION
Lay the wing out on the ground. Start at the leading edge. Run your hands along every inch. Look for small tears, especially near the cells. Even a pinhole can turn into a catastrophic rip at altitude.
Check the lines. They’re your lifeline. Separate each line from the others. Look for fraying, knots, or burns. If a line feels stiff or looks fuzzy, it’s weak. Replace it before you fly.
Test the risers. These connect the lines to your harness. Pull on each one. They should feel solid, not stretchy. If a riser feels loose or looks worn, ground the wing.
STEP 4: SPEED SYSTEM TEST
Sit in your harness. Attach the speed bar. Pull it all the way down. It should move smoothly, no snags. If it sticks, check for dirt or frayed cords.
Inspect the pulleys. They should spin freely. If they’re stiff or squeaky, lubricate them. If they’re cracked, replace them. A stuck pulley can lock your speed system mid-flight.
STEP 5: HELMET CHECK
Put it on. Adjust the straps. It should sit snug, not wobble. If it’s loose, tighten it. If it’s cracked or dented, get a new one. Your brain’s worth the investment.
Check the visor. It should be clear, no scratches. If it’s foggy or cracked, replace it. Visibility is everything at 15,000 feet.
STEP 6: RADIO AND ALTIMETER TEST
Turn on the radio. Test it with your ground crew. If the signal’s weak or static-filled, change the batteries. If it’s still bad, get a new radio. You need clear comms at altitude.

STEP 8: FINAL PRE-FLIGHT WALKAROUND
